WORD, a Dedham Square Artist Guild Artist Challenge

Pause

The Challenge:

“A picture is worth a thousand words”Is it? Show us! We are challenging all artists working in any medium to create new work with the theme “Word.” Will you translate common expressions such as “there are no words”… “I give you my word”…”word up”? Will you incorporate words into your work? Will you explore a world without words at all? We can’t wait to find out!

This Challenge is open to all artists, working in any medium, who work/reside in eastern Massachusetts. This magnificent show will be hosted in the lower gallery at the Dedham Community Theatre! 580 High Street, Dedham, MA. http://www.dedhamcommunitytheatre.com

I decided to create a tile for this challenge. The piece has an indent on the back side for easy hanging. It can also be used as a trivet, or grouted and incorporated into a tile wall.

My piece is entitled “Pause”. Letters are pressed into the surface of the clay… pause… reflect. welcome… change. The words are symbolic for both seasonal change and life change.

Working out the composition and laying the under color.

Carving images of the sun or moon “reflecting” onto the water. Carving images of “changing” leaves to reference seasonal change. Enjoying the colors coming through and adding more paint for contrast.

The image is glazed with a clear and the words are unglazed. The tile is ready to be fired in the kiln.
