Imagine! The theme for Potters Place spring show is “Imagine”, inspired by a favorite quote from Albert Einstein, “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.” Show coordinators, Ronda & Helayne asked Potters Place members to “Imagine” what would happen if they took a piece that they make on a regular basis and did something different with it.
“Imagine!” prompted a collection for me…. I began experimenting with some new floral stamps on both wheel thrown and hand built forms. As I began pressing into the clay, I embraced its malleable surface and began creating a new surface filled with flowers. I used colored slip trailing and carving to further decorate and then turned to watercolor under-glaze for color. After bisque firing my work, I found the glaze I planned to use was contaminated so I had to “Imagine!” using another glaze. By choosing Opal, I needed to embrace the characteristic of a glaze with movement. Knowing my vertical pottery would be affected; I decided to match my watercolor underglaze with actual glaze. The result was better than I imagined and my favorite piece in the collection emerged (see inserted photo).
Photos of the process…

My family visited San Francisco, California this past August. We toured Monterey and Carmel, viewed Big Sur and then traveled north to Sausalito and into wine country before heading into the foggy city of San Francisco in the summertime. Here’s a look at some of the inspiration for my forms and surface decoration.

I will be featuring a new collection for spring that was inspired by a winter weekend with childhood friends. The collection features the pottery needed for our ladies lunch. The surface decorated in the colors of the ocean, dotted with fresh growth and a lattice that is symbolic of the friendships that support and guide our growth. Please join me at my cooperative studio: Potters Place in Walpole, Ma to celebrate all we are as we invite you into a place that will show customers “How We Make It”.
My family traveled to Europe this past summer. We took in many sights including art museums, monuments and the natural beauty of many countries. Mealtime discussions were about what we were seeing and doing; and, what we were eating and drinking. We ate and drank what was traditional and local to that region of that country: Gnocchi in Venice, Italy; Tiramisu in Florence, Italy; Moules Frites in Nice, France; and, Jamon Serrano in Barcelona, Spain.
Breakfast at the Baglioni (Florence, Italy)
