Flowers

“Flowers”: a summer collection installed at the Dedham Square Artist Guild located in historic Dedham Square, Dedham, MA

In the summer months, I enjoy working with low fire clay. A lower firing temperature allows me to utilize brighter colors that can “burn out” when the temperature in a ceramics kiln is higher.  I began creating my “Flowers” collection while working on my summer art classes curricula.

I spent time at my local library, pouring over books to come up with new and exciting ideas for my students and found myself interested in learning more about certain flowers.

Vessels were hand built and ready for surface decoration. Slips, textures, carving and underglaze ceramic paints were used to create imagery; low fire glazes completed the vision.

“Flowers” can be functional for bouquets in water, food for a party; or, individual pieces can be hung on a wall or displayed on a tabletop.  My ceramics are meant to be picked up and explored.  Textured surfaces to the finger tip are a delight. Three dimensional art begs to be touched, picked up and interacted with.  Ceramics is functional art.

Please visit the Dedham Square Artist Guild to purchase a piece from “Flowers”.  Each piece is one of a kind.  The collection is small but varied.  Each piece stands alone but works well together.  “Flowers” is perfect for the collector and just right for a wedding gift.

A special exhibition hosted by the Dedham Square Artist Guild

at the Dedham Community Theatre
Opening Reception: March 3, 6pm to 8pm
Join us for the Art Opening for Oliver!

Exhibition Dates: March 3, 2016 to April 30, 2016

The challenge: “What does grit look like … courage, bravery, strength of character? We’re paying tribute to Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist in conjunction with the Parish Players production of OLIVER! Dickens sets the innocence of childhood against the squalor and corruption of the city. He showed us what grit meant to him in his novel. We challenge you to define grit in your art… in a portrait of a hard scrabble city dweller? In the stark landscape of urban industrialism? Show us!”

“Reflection” opens tonight

Uncategorized

Artist Challenge: REFLECTION … “As the seasons change, so does reflection. We see reflection in light or hear it in sound. When the year comes to a close, do you reflect on what was, what will be? How can a reflection be cool or warm? How will you define it in your medium?”IMG_1972

IMG_1988This Challenge was open to all artists, working in any medium, who work/reside in eastern Massachusetts. I chose to submit two RAKU vases.  With my “prelude” brushwork on the exterior surface and coppery reflective glaze on the interior, it  defined “Reflection” in my medium: clay.

Raku is a low-firing process that was inspired by traditional Japanese raku firing. Western-style raku involves removing pottery from the kiln while at bright red heat and placing it into containers with combustible materials, such as sawdust and shredded paper.

10703649_850249931674957_6164981609592720509_n 1002370_849804565052827_3696928856331226166_n1898280_10152915225110116_7005566621584131932_nOnce the materials ignite, the containers are closed. This produces an intense reduction atmosphere which effects the colors in glazes and clay bodies. This is when the wonderful reflective coppery sheen happens.

IMG_1888The drastic thermal shock also produces cracking; therefore, Raku is fragile and cannot withstand water. The non functional aspect means that the interior is unoccupied and light travels in to reflect the copper red glaze.

See my vases and the work of other artists as they respond to “Reflection” in their mediums.

Participating Artists Include:
Lisa W B Walker, Cindy Mootz, Lonnie Landrey, Gretje Ferguson, Fred Smith, Rali Weaver, Dennis Stein, Kerry Hawkins, Alice Donaldson, Wendy Birchmire, Danielle Leveille, Sharon Pierce, Nancy Walton, Anna Gemelli, and Gillian Jackson

IMG_1978IMG_1987Raku is always one of a kind. It is a ceramic sculpture that has captured a moment in time where artist, fire and process become one. Enjoy the luminosity of the copper reds that come to life in the reduction process, and the exterior brushwork and crackle that reflect nature in a season of change.

“Reflection”, a Dedham Square Artist Guild Artist Challenge, opens tonight, Thursday, December 4th from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.  This show will be hosted in the lower gallery at the Dedham Community Theatre. 580 High Street, Dedham, MA. http://www.dedhamcommunitytheatre.com

Exhibition Dates: December 4th, 2014 to January 30th, 2015

Small Business Saturday ~ November 29th

Uncategorized

What is Small Business Saturday?
Sandwiched between “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday”, SBS is a day to pledge to “shop small” and support independently owned businesses in the Square and around town. Amex is even offering an added incentive to shop small today!

Why does it matter?
Money spent at a small, independently owned business stays in the same community at a rate of three times more than when it is spent at a chain store. Shopping locally is investing in your community.

Please shop small today at the following shops and galleries who sell my ceramics:

Gallery Sitting ~ Wednesday, March 27th 12-6 PM

As a member of the Dedham Square Artist Guild, I gallery sit 6 hours each month. Wednesday, March 26th is my day at the Gallery and I can’t wait!

It is a wonderful experience to be in the gallery – my guild! I love to see what members have recently added to their inventory and I look forward to seeing customers.

I will be bringing in pieces from my Spring 2014 collection. This collection was influenced by a family trip to Turks & Caicos. Soft ocean blues and tropical greens work well with peachy tones from the sand. Shell imprints, basket weaves, patterns from the trip embellish the surfaces of plates, dishes, tumblers and bowls.

Mix and match within this collection to create a wedding or birthday gift. Don’t forget Mom this Mother’s Day (May 11th). Pick up a piece for your Easter gathering and leave it for the hostess.

Kids Clay Class is Monday, January 27th - last day to register is Friday, January 24th

The Dedham Square Artist Guild has teamed up with the Dedham Community House to offer art classes. My next Clay Class for Kids is Monday, January 27th – last day to register is Friday, January 24th.

Clay Class for Kids (first grade and older) will be a “Valentine’s Day” themed class. Last year I taught my students to create a pinch pot that they decorated, some made heart shaped bowls. There was also an opportunity to make a flat tile so that students could play with surface elements like stamping and adding clay elements. Using non-toxic red and white paint, students decorated their work.

For this year’s class, we may try something different.

I clear coat the students works of art and fire them in a kiln (at Potters Place, my cooperative studio in Walpole). Finished artwork will be available toward the end of February at the Dedham Square Artist Guild Gallery, 553 High Street in Dedham Square.

I am hosting additional clay classes and those are listed on my website.
