Happy Easter ~ Handmade Baskets

Uncategorized

IMG_9722 Every year, I like to welcome in spring with herb markers and baskets.  This year, the baskets worked well with my spring collection: Turks and Caicos.

I make my baskets by combining two techniques: wheel throwing and hand building.  The baskets are thrown as bowls on my pottery wheel.  This year I added a split rim for glaze pooling.

When the clay is setting up, I roll some coils and then stamp them with a basket weave pattern.

glazing basketsWhen ready, I squish in the sides of the bowl and attach the handles.  I dry them very slowly over the next few days.  Then finish them off with a pony roller and a push to indent the bottom.

The baskets are fired in a bisque before they are able to be glazed. I use a brown glaze to accent the pattern on the handle, then glazed them in my Turks and Caicos color palette of soft green and blues. Once fired for the second time, the baskets are sanded on the bottom and hand washed where I check for any imperfections.

The baskets are photographed, priced and added into inventory.

The baskets were delivered to the Dedham Square Artist Guild, located in Dedham, Ma just in time for my trunk show last weekend.

IMG_0121There are three baskets left and they are currently for sale at the Dedham Guild.  Once in the Guild, you will find many things to fill your basket with – like handcrafted eggs by Cindy Mootz; Easter cards by Kerry Hawkins; jewelry by Melanie Guerra, Barbara Trainer and Jill Barry, as well as the first book by illustrator artist, Marietta Apollonio entitled “A Curious Alphabet for Curious People”, and so much more.

The guild is open 12-6 Weds-Saturday;11-2 on Sundays but THIS Sunday it will be closed for Easter.

“Making Waves” – An Artist Challenge, opens with a reception on Thursday, September 26th from 6-8pm at the Dedham Community Theatre.

The Challenge:  “MAKING WAVES”

“Waves… on the water, to a friend, in the status quo. How do you like to make waves? Whether it is causing a stir or literally making a splash in water, this Artist Challenge asks artists to shake things up a bit, we want to see how you can make waves! ”

IMG_6786

Here is the story of my piece….

I grew up on an peninsula of land north of Boston and as an adult, I spend most summer weekends at the beach either south of Boston or in southern Rhode Island.  Water is part of my life. I enjoy watching the waves, the sunsets over the water, boats, and exploring the beach.  Collecting sea glass is one of my favorite things to do.

I wanted to make a piece that would hold the sea glass I collect, remind me of the lighthouses that I love, give the illusion of rocking like a boat in the water, and incorporate the movement of a wave.

trimming to create the desired effects: reference to light house shape and illusion of rocking movement.

complete!

This is a one of a kind piece. It will be part of a bigger exhibit that opens this Thursday, September 26th at the Dedham Community Theater.  Immediately following the reception, my piece will be moved to the Dedham Square Artist Guild Gallery across the street from the Theater where it will be on display and for sale with the other three dimensional artwork. Two dimensional work will remain at the Theater for the duration of the exhibit.

Spinning Top Series – a Custom Art Framing & Gallery 9 exclusive

Spinning Top Series - a Custom Art Framing & Gallery 9 exclusive

Transitions are difficult for me. I find myself all over the place, literally and figuratively. I’m wound up and then my feet hit the ground and I’m spinning off in all directions like a toy top. September is always a time when transitions seem to be happening all the time… school, schedules, seasonal changes and a time when I have to kick it into high gear to produce work for fall and holiday sales.

This is how the “Spinning Top” work came to be.

spinning tops series fall 2013

Sitting on my potters wheel and spinning is a very soothing act to me. I”m centering the clay and myself at the same time. Feeling the wet clay in my hands must be how a gardener or farmer feels when they sink their hands into the warm dirt on a summer morning… bliss and wonder.

The Gallery Connection ~ Custom Art Framing & Gallery 9

The Gallery Connection ~ Custom Art Framing & Gallery 9

It must have been at least five years ago that I, as a member of the Westwood League of Fine Artists, was given the opportunity to participate in a gallery show in Norwood, MA. I submitted both 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional pieces. During the show, the owner of the gallery purchased one of my carved bowls and asked me if I might like to sell some of my work at her shop. This was the beginning of my relationship with Custom Art Framing & Gallery 9.

Today I am bringing over new work: three tumbler/vases in glazes that owner, Julie Vecchio suggested I try. One of the best things about having the opportunity to sell in a gallery is the relationship one has with the person who is selling your work. Over the years, I’ve learned and continue to learn from both Julie and gallery 9’s Kim Morin Weineck to look at my work in new ways and this has made me more of a critical thinker when I examine my own work.

Roving galleries bring art into public eye

Roving galleries bring art into public eye

Sometime this week, my plates (above) will be featured on the wall at Isabella, an upscale restaurant in Dedham Square. As part of the Dedham Square Artists Guild, many of us participate in the “roving gallery”. These plates were created to coordinate with the decor at Isabella and hang on their wall (foot ring has holes for wire to hang). Wheel thrown stoneware plates have a simple black and white design that will work in tandem with the food they will serve.

Roving galleries that the Dedham Square Artist Guild members participate are located at the following locations: Mocha Java, Kouzina, Deli After Dark, Dr Lickteig’s, and more… Its a great way to get art out into the community for all to see and enjoy. All art is for sale and can be purchased on site or through the guild’s gallery at 553 High Street in Dedham.

Artist of the Month – reception April 4th 5-8pm

Artist of the Month - reception April 4th 5-8pm

Dedham Square Artist Guild gallery opening reception for April Artist of the Month show features ceramicist Lisa W.B. Walker … with music by Band Gig from 6-7pm.

Lisa WB Walker
Westwood, MA

“My spring collection is quite whimsical with dots and flowers playing together on the surface of my wheel thrown and hand built ceramic art. Using underglaze paints, surface embellishment, and playful soft colors, the collection reminds us of youth and rightfully so as the artist reflects on child’s play as she watches her children forge ahead leaving childhood behind. Created in white stoneware and fired in an electric kiln, my pottery is durable, food safe, and dishwasher friendly. It is just as pretty hung on a wall as it is when accompanied by food.”

The gallery is located at 553 High Street in Dedham, MA
