On August 6th, WestwoodWinds Community Band performed a concert in conjunction with a Westwood Artists exhibition at the Westwood High School entitled “Art & Soul”. The collaborative event threw a spotlight on artists of all kinds in the community. The concert, entitled “Where the Wild Things Are,” featured its usual eclectic blend of familiar pieces relating to animals. Young children, especially, enjoyed “Peter and the Wolf” with narration by Westwood Media Director, Melinda Garfield.

During the concert, Westwood Artists provided materials to children and adults alike to make their own paper quilt square of their favorite animal. Students in Westwood Recreation 2D summer art classes and Westwood Library’s summer Monday Craft Program also contributed to this project.

Apple Blossoms

inspiration, shop local

IMG_0989

The apple blossoms this spring were everywhere… perhaps it was the wacky weather or the fact that spring seemed to take forever to get here, all I know is that everywhere I looked, the flowers were blooming.  The tree in my own front yard brought a smile to my face every time I returned home.

IMG_1009

Life inspires art and as I sat down to create new work, the apple blossoms collection began.  Using an actual twig from my tree, assorted hand carved and purchased stamps, I “drew” my clay pictures taking inspiration from shapes of my molds.

IMG_1111

Once the clay was bone dry, I used my watercolor underglazes to add color to the images before loading them into the bisque kiln.

IMG_1264

Out of the first kiln, the collection was glazed and loaded into the 2nd kiln to add functionality to each piece.  At each stage, the flowers welcomed me and provided a memory that symbolized spring, rebirth, change, peace, beauty and more.

My new collection is currently installed at the Dedham Square Artist Guild.  The work has a wonderful feel and quiet beauty that although functional, stands alone as ceramic art.  There are 6 pieces in this group … 2 small square plates, 2 small oblong trays and 2 larger square plates.  The Guild is open Wednesday – Saturday 12-6, Sunday 11-2 in Dedham Square.

Makers Day

food and pottery, inspiration, sale, shop local, techniques

Westwoimg_1664od Artists, (photographer Karen Cagan, fiber artist Kathy Zola and ceramic artist Lisa W B Walker) arrived at Powisset Farm early on August 27th to set up their stations and begin creating art inspired by the farm.

This was the first Makers Day held at Powisset Farm.  It included visual artists as well as music (by My Mothers Moustache), performances (scenes from Shakespeare’s Hamlet by Medfield Gazebo Players), food (baking bread in the kitchen) and interactive kids activities. All artists were inspired by Powisset Farm.

As a ceramic artist, I am inspired by the vegetation that grows at the farm. I gathered herbs and other leaves from the fields, placed them on low fire clay and added colored slips. I love the way the clay captures the texture of a leaf!

img_1665

I found compositions to create into functional objects in my demonstration … some small dishes and ornaments.  My favorite leaves turned out to be a sunflower leaf and a tomato plant’s leafy vine. Other interesting leaves were sage, green bean leaves and parsley.

This collection is still in process, but I will be at the farm with my permanent collection of functional pottery this coming Saturday. My work references nature and leaves; flowers and growth are important elements in my permanent collections. Stop in to say hello and enjoy this beautiful Trustees of the Reservation property.

About the Artists
Sue Hoy

“As an artist, I am trying to capture the spirit of my subject by reducing details
and concentrating on light and shape. My paintings are rich in color and
bold in brushwork. I am inspired by nature’s beauty and the chance to interpret
it in simple, yet compelling ways.”

Sue Hoy is a painter, graphic designer and art teacher living in Milton MA.
Her inspiration comes from her family and the endless beauty of New England.
Choosing subjects that capture attention and emotion, Sue strives to simplify shape
and color to reflect the essence of her subject. Her voyage toward simplicity,
versus over-working and illustrating with paint, is ongoing. Her paintings have
been in numerous shows in Massachusetts and she currently has a solo show at
Abby Park in Milton, MA. She teaches painting and clay classes for children
in the Milton public schools and at Milton Art Center.

Lisa WB Walker

I fell in love with a color: Robin’s egg blue; and, it defined summer for me.
Early morning bird calls greet a warm rising sun that announces day break.
Watch the soft wind blowing a sheer textured curtain as you lay blinking sleep from
your eyes. You are young, free from school, and you feel what summer really is.

Lisa W. B. Walker is an Artist working in clay who lives in Westwood, Massachusetts.
She creates wheel thrown or hand built functional ware to explore surface decoration
in order to create one of a kind original work. Lisa received her Studio Art Degree
from Skidmore College, continuing with additional classes at the Museum School
of Fine Arts Boston and the Art Institute of Boston. She writes a weekly blog,
www.lisawbwalker.wordpress.com, participates in local arts related community
service, and, shares her knowledge through teaching, workshops and demonstrations.
