A special exhibition hosted by the Dedham Square Artist Guild

at the Dedham Community Theatre
Opening Reception: March 3, 6pm to 8pm
Join us for the Art Opening for Oliver!

Exhibition Dates: March 3, 2016 to April 30, 2016

The challenge: “What does grit look like … courage, bravery, strength of character? We’re paying tribute to Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist in conjunction with the Parish Players production of OLIVER! Dickens sets the innocence of childhood against the squalor and corruption of the city. He showed us what grit meant to him in his novel. We challenge you to define grit in your art… in a portrait of a hard scrabble city dweller? In the stark landscape of urban industrialism? Show us!”

LISA W B WALKER POTTERY ~ Clay for me is the vessel from which my inner voice translates best. I am fascinated by the feel of the clay in my hands and the connections I make while working at my potter’s wheel. My love of color, drawing, surface decoration and functionality play a role in creating my work that is autobiographical by nature. I received my Studio Art Degree from Skidmore College, continuing with additional classes at the Museum School of Fine Arts Boston, Art Institute of Boston and Harvard University. I create my one of a kind work in my home studio in Westwood, MA and at Potters Place, a not for profit school and cooperative studio, in Walpole. I am a Dedham Square Artist Guild Member.

KAREN CAGAN PHOTOGRAPHY ~ I am an amateur photographer who has been taking photographs for over 30 years. I especially enjoy taking photos around the town of Westwood, where I live as well as taking pictures of my family. For the past 4 years, I have been photographing Powisset Farm in Dover, MA to take advantage of it’s beautiful setting. In the past, I have used my Canon AE 1 (1978) to take black and white photos. It still takes great photos after all these years. Presently, I have a Canon G12 digital camera which I have been enjoying since I received it in 2012. In my collection, my favorite photos are of lighthouses,Fenway Park, the beach, farms, and all things autumn. As an avid scrapbooker, I enjoy photographing my family and making memories for my children. I love being behind a camera!

A map for the event can be downloaded here.

Boston Globe reports:

BOSTON — The annual sales tax holiday in Massachusetts would be held Aug. 16-17 under a bill released by a legislative committee of conference on Wednesday evening.

The sales tax holiday was included in an economic development bill, which is among the last major pieces of legislation being considered before the legislative session ends for the year on Thursday.

Rep. Joseph Wagner, a Chicopee Democrat and chairman of the Joint Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies, said that sales tax holiday “is significant for the Commonwealth’s economy.”

“THINK BIG”

“THINK BIG”, a Dedham Square Artist Guild sponsored art exhibit opens with a reception at the Dedham Community Theatre from 6-8PM on Thursday, November 14th.

Artists across eastern Massachusetts created 14 supersized works of at least 24 inches in different mediums that will be on display from Nov. 14 through January 2 at the Dedham Community Theatre on High Street.

About my piece:
My “BIG” vase was made in porcelain while I was studying art at Skidmore College. It was the last time that I had the opportunity to fire my work in a large reduction kiln. This type of firing uses gas and that is what produces these beautiful copper reds. The surface decoration feels very holiday to me with its reds and greens. I imagine this vase filled with an arrangement of red roses and white lilies, holly with tiny red berries, pine and perhaps ivy for a glorious centerpiece.

It’s functional pottery created to bring beauty to everyday life.

To purchase this one of a kind wheel thrown ceramic vase, please visit the Dedham Square Artist Guild gallery for details or stop by the reception this Thursday.

This beautiful photograph of my vase was taken by Kerry Hawkins. Please visit her website to see the wonderful images she captures with her camera.
